چکیده

Chemical characterization of scaling and removal processes was performed in real time via Raman spectroscopy a bench-scale reverse osmosis (RO) system. A custom RO cross-flow cell integrated with microscope objective, allowing for analysis localized membrane scale removal. Permeate flux also measured to provide real-time metric comparison. commercial flat sheet, thin-film composite (TFC RO) scaled using calcium sulfate (CaSO4·H2O) feed solution. Upon CaSO4 detection, the switched DI water, which served as cleaning agent remove from membrane. In addition local (Raman) global (permeate flux) measurements, samples were characterized post-mortem spectroscopy, gravimetric scanning electron microscopy important metrics. Results measurements indicated that changes intensity more sensitive indicator than permeate flux, standard performance metric; these findings corroborated by analyses. Overall, experiments showed provided crucial chemical composition spatial distribution information, can inform effective antiscaling strategies.

Analyses of calcium carbonate scale deposition on four RO membranes under a seawater desalination condition.

Inorganic fouling is one of the critical operational issues in reverse osmosis membrane. Few researches investigated effects of membrane surface characteristics on inorganic fouling and on anti-scaling techniques although the fouling occurs on the membrane surface. The objective of this paper was to examine whether different characteristics of deposition of calcium carbonate solids would occur ...

Boron removal in seawater RO desalination

In the seawater desalination field, WHO requires the boron concentration in drinking water to be below 0.5 mg/l, and this requirement has affected SWRO process design, because of the difficulty to achieve such low boron concentration. In order to overcome this problem, a new SWRO membrane element, which had higher boron rejecting performance, was developed. This new SWRO membrane element exhibi...

Estrogenic hormone removal from wastewater using NF/RO membranes

This paper investigates the separation process of two estrogenic hormones, estrone and estradiol, using eight commercial NF and low pressure RO membranes. The results indicate that the separation mechanism of estrone and estradiol in membrane filtration processes is similar. While estrogenic hormone retention by more porous membranes decreases with decreasing adsorption and the subsequent reten...

Real‐Time Monitoring of Enzyme‐Catalysed Reactions using Deep UV Resonance Raman Spectroscopy

For enzyme-catalysed biotransformations, continuous in situ detection methods minimise the need for sample manipulation, ultimately leading to more accurate real-time kinetic determinations of substrate(s) and product(s). We have established for the first time an on-line, real-time quantitative approach to monitor simultaneously multiple biotransformations based on UV resonance Raman (UVRR) spe...
